Our Cause

Battle Against Cancer

In October of 2003, my younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. With no family history of cancer, we were shocked by the news. Fortunately, we do have a family history of strong women and after having a lumpectomy, my sister was free of cancer and has since been in remission.

Unfortunately though, the saying ‘following in my mother’s footsteps’ pertains to the good and bad. In January of 2004, my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and after an amazing inspirational fight, lost the battle in June. That same week, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and soon after, had both of my breasts removed.

Some may see our story as a series of misfortunes; I consider us nothing short of lucky and fortunate. I was amazed and genuinely touched by the outpouring of love and support received from family, friends, and medical miracle workers (our doctors and nurses). My son and his best friend completed the Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk in Washington D.C. and raised over $11,000 in the process! Since words can barely describe the role my husband played along the fight, I will use only four: he was an angel.

While in and out of surgeries, I found myself a bit down, tired at times, and in need of an uplifting companion… And in enters my beautiful Havanese puppy. Named after her pearl-colored fluff and infinite loving energy, Pearl (the Wonder Dog) never left my side. From accompanying me to the hospital, easing chemo sessions for me and other patients, and to traveling for family visits, Pearl provided me the energy that I sometimes could not muster up myself.

Battle Against Chemotherapy

My hair was finally coming back!

For those familiar with the effects of chemotherapy, you can understand a woman’s struggle to feel beautiful and confident as she experiences the many side effects, such as hair loss, dry patchy skin, and considerable weight loss, among others. Coping with skin issues led me to the creation of DN’s products. While creating these products I kept thinking about a way to give back.

As passionate as I am about my Devera Naturals products, I am just as passionate about early detection. An annual mammogram saved my life. Because I had been having mammograms every year, the changes that appeared in 2004 were readily apparent. And so I found the way to give back – Devera Naturals has joined forces with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. A percentage of each product sold is donated to this amazing charity.
